Charter schools have been getting a lot of press lately. Especially now that the new schools year has rolled around and the political arena is at a fevered pitch with all the conventions happening now. Finding a way to improve our school systems through out is a task that will be under taken by who ever comes into power as the new president.
There has been a lot of talk and debate of course about the success and effectiveness of charter schools on a grand scale and what the government may or may not want to do in response to this growing trend of charter schools across the country. More and more charter schools are popping up all over the country with more coming as each new school year begins.
So what are these charter schools? The basic premise of the charter school is this. They are an alternative school either for elementary secondary schools. That receive public funding but are not held to some of the state rules and regulations. They do however have a mission statement their charter that sets forth the goal of the school for every student that attends. Their admissions are usually run like a lottery system with no tuition’s being charged. Also because charter schools are not held to the same rules and regulations as public schools they have more say on how the curriculum of the school will be geared. For example they can focus more on the the arts or sciences but most simply aim to improve upon the accomplishments of neighboring public schools.
There has been talk in the political debates about perhaps loosening the state regulations regarding charter schools and maybe encouraging more of a charter school premise instead of the public school format that dominates the country right now. What are your thoughts on opening up the regulations for charter schools and encouraging more of a competitive market for our schools system to try an elevate not only the number of students getting an education but the quality of education that is available. Please share your opinions with a few comments here and thanks for reading.
