Can English Be The Official Language

Our educational systems are failing the youth of today when it comes to teaching english as the primary language. Evidence to that is results coming out of TX and the test numbers coming out of their schools are consistently below 50%! There is an alarming rate of dropouts for students that are faced with the challenge of learning english as a second language and the systems in place are failing them.

Are these deficiencies the failure of the school systems in place or is it something bigger than that. Consider this, the country as a whole has made a conscience effort in the last 10 years to enable spanish communication to be acceptable in every aspect of businesses and government. Call a customer service line and 9 times out of 10 there is a selection for what language you speak. Basic signs in public places are more frequently being placed with more than one language.

How much of what you read during the day do you actually retain in your mind to recall that information later? Do you actively read for pleasure or is your daily reading due to job requirements? If it is a job requirement than being able to recall what you have read is probably a vital aspect of keeping your job. The Use Of Active Reading Strategies When Understanding Content

With each and every day, a typical person goes through an incredible amount of text material. Consider newspapers, email, junk mail, advertising, internet news stories, online profiles and even the occasional serious correspondence. In the context of active reading strategies, if we took a moment to evaluate at the end of any given day how much material we truly absorbed, the results could prove discouraging.
Consider way you remember from the newspaper you glanced through? Do you recall the front page headline and the caption beneath the front picture? Or do you recall the details in the text? It is more likely that the visual elements of the headline and photo have etched themselves in to your memory, rather than the actual words. It is often hard for a writer to swallow that pictures can speak much louder than words, but it’s an important lesson to understand when apply active reading strategies.
